LGBT Character of the Week: Angel (1602)

1602_a.jpgThis week's entry is almost worthy of a Shakepearian plot twist in the vein of Twelfth Night. It's complicated, so try and follow along. In the mainstream continuity Angel is straight and has a major crush on Jean Grey. In 1602, which is actually mainstream reality, Angel is gay, with a major crush on John Grey, who is Jean Grey pretending to be a man, becuase women have no rights in Elizabeathen England, so in a way Angel only ever has a crush on Jean Grey. Got it? Of course things are complicated by Scotius Summerisle (Scott Summers) who thinks Angel knows John is Jean and its trying to hit on her/him despite his relationship (albeit secret because Jean is John after all) with Jean, I mean John.

So now that I think about it I guess today's entry is a two-fer. Gay Angel and Crossdressing Jean Grey. Sweet!

....Yeah, wow. Maybe I won't bother reading the 3 years' worth of Whedon-penned X-men I have saved up, if that's what I'm gonna have to deal with for soap-operatic plot lines.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

Review: Stormwatch #1 Stormwatch #1, the first of DC's new 52 to feature LGBT characters (before the reboot, at least) is out to add a new cosmic dimension to the post-Flashpoint universe. There isn't much to be said for our beloved broship yet (though the last page shows a handshake between Apollo and Midnighter and promises a "Big Bang"), but the issue is a great gauge for whether or not you'll want to stick with the series to see the romance purportedly unfold....
